Mr. Woods studied accounting at Brigham Young University, where he received his bachelor’s degree with Highest Honors in 1981. He also received his master’s degree with emphasis in taxation in 1981, graduating With Distinction. Mr. Woods successfully completed the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination that same year, receiving the Elijah Watts Sells award, given annually for the 100 highest scores nationwide, and received the highest score in the state.

A California native, Mr. Woods has been associated with a nationally recognized law firm, and has also served as in-house counsel to a publicly traded firm. Mr. Woods has been a member of the Utah State Bar since 1984, and of the Nevada State Bar since 1990, and the Arizona bar since 2001. In 1995 Mr. Woods and John Erickson founded this law firm.

Mr. Woods specializes in taxation and estate planning. He also has considerable experience in handling federal and state securities registrations, commercial and real estate transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and litigated matters. Mr. Woods has also represented individuals and companies in federal and state tax disputes, in the courts, and before the IRS and state tax agencies.

Mr. Woods consults with individuals and companies who are looking for ways to structure transactions so as to minimize tax consequences. He advises individuals and businesses in tax and asset protection matters, and advanced income and estate tax planning techniques. Mr. Woods frequently assists in the establishment of charitable foundations, charitable trusts, limited partnerships, revocable and irrevocable trusts, dynasty trusts, asset protection trusts, and assists individuals and businesses in succession planning. Mr. Woods also forms business organizations, most frequently in situations in which tax considerations are relevant. In addition to income and estate tax matters, Mr. Woods also has considerable experience in state sales and use taxes, and federal and state excise tax matters.

Mr. Woods is a member of the Nevada and Utah State Bar Associations, the American Bar Association, the Southern Nevada Estate Planning Council, and the American Association of Attorney-Certified Public Accountants.

John R. Erickson is one of the firm’s founding partners. His practice encompasses real estate, commercial representation, and secured lending. He received his B.A. in Economics (magna cum laude), from Brigham Young University in 1982. While at Brigham Young University he received the prestigious Edwin S. Hinckley Scholarship. He received his Juris Doctor (also magna cum laude) from Brigham Young University in 1985. Erickson is fluent in Spanish and is a member of the Nevada Bar Association.

Brian C. Whitaker joined the firm in 2000. He is a partner in the firm and his primary areas of practice involve commercial litigation, business law, employment litigation and tort litigation. A native of Salt Lake City, he received a B.S. in Business from Brigham Young University in 1981 and a Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego in 1985. He has membership in the Nevada and California Bars, U.S. District Court, the District of Nevada, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court Bar. His association involvement includes the Clark County and American Bar Associations, State Bar of Nevada and State Bar of California. Mr. Whitaker also speaks French.

Andrew joined the transactional practice group of Woods & Erickson LLP in 2007 and serves clients in commercial transactions, corporate governance, and commercial real estate and finance matters. Andrew’s clients are operating around the country and on five continents. Andrew serves as outside corporate counsel for online and technology companies as well as advising closely-held businesses groups in diverse industries including aviation, commercial development, and entertainment.

He graduated cum laude from Brigham Young University Law School and draws on the perspective gained from wise judges through internships at State and Federal Courts. He was admitted to the Nevada Bar in 2007 and the California Bar in 2009.

Andrew attended high school in the United Arab Emirates, served as a volunteer missionary in Northern France, and has since lived in Arizona and Nevada. He has volunteered with legal aid and served on the board of a charter school for at-risk youth.

Kent P. Woods joined the firm in 2013.  He received his B.A. in English, magna cum laude, from Brigham Young University in 2004 and graduated magna cum laude, Order of the Coif from Washington & Lee University School in 2008.  He served as a staff writer on the Washington & Lee Law Review and received the Roy L. Steinheimer Award for Commercial Law.  Before joining the firm he practiced in the insolvency and restructuring department at a major international law firm and in a boutique bankruptcy litigation practice.  He is admitted to the bars of Nevada, New York, and Virginia, and his primary areas of practice include bankruptcy, commercial litigation, taxation, and business planning.

John joined the firm in 2014 as an accountant, while attending William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He also graduated from law school and was admitted to the Nevada Bar during 2014. As an attorney, John has continued to use the accounting experience he accrued over seven years in both the public and private sectors to assist clients with both business and personal accounting and tax issues. This experience has proven beneficial as John continues to help clients prepare and file tax returns in multiple jurisdictions within the United States and abroad, structure transactions to minimize tax liabilities, and resolve tax disputes with the IRS or other regulatory agencies. Additionally, John has assisted clients with matters in bankruptcy, estate planning, probate, and commercial contracts and leasing. He has also served as in-house corporate counsel for a multinational entertainment company while the company restructured its international operations.

Prior to attending law school, John received his bachelor’s degree in accounting, magna cum laude, from Southern Utah University in 2006. He continued on to receive his master’s degree in accounting, with an emphasis in taxation in 2007.
